are for use

monday in the life

this post, and the other ones tagged with librarydayinthelife, are part of the annual blogathon by the same name. bobbi newman (aka librarian by day, and the instigator of this day-in-the-life shenanigan) has aggregated some feeds in netvibes. check it out!

i work as a library technician, on-call, for two systems (the surrey public library, and the fraser valley regional library). i work the reference desk, but i sub in for storytimes as well. according to google maps, my route covers at least 150km. my mobile phone has become like some sort of robotic appendage i have to have drag around at all times, checking to see anyone has fallen ill with swine flu and wants me to come in. it’s extremely annoying, but i do love my work.

so what’s my day in the life?

morning involves making sure i have my mobile switched on while brewing the coffee. surrey usually calls around 9.30 if they are going to need a shift filled, though with fraser valley it’s anybody’s guess when the phone will ring since they don’t do centralised calling and individual branches are responsible for finding their own fill-ins.

today was a calmer morning because i had received a call friday to come into chilliwack tonight for a closing (5.00-9.00) shift. i spent most of my day working on a mentorship program that i’m helping develop for ltaig (the library technicians’ and assistants’ interest group), doing house-y things, and checking my email to see if work had offered me any shifts.

i worked my four hours on desk (to which my twitterfeed can testify), and afterwards found out i had missed a call from another branch (same system) because somewhere along the line someone had forgotten to file me electronically as being on desk. i’ll have to wait for the morning to find out if i’m working tomorrow… ah, precarity.
